Biography

Rachel Boyoung Kim is a multiple-Emmy award winning documentary filmmaker in Sacramento and currently works at ABC10 as a Special Projects Photojournalist/Producer, where she has a number of pre-production, production, and post-production responsibilities. At ABC10, she is involved in producing, shooting, and editing longer-form original news content including: cultural/community stories, investigative pieces, and character-driven narratives. She is an expert in editing tools such as Premiere Pro and After Effects, and she is a skilled cinematographer as well as a FAA-certified drone pilot.

                                          

She is an experienced filmmaker from South Korea who has won awards and scholarships for several films and is adept at many aspects of directing, producing, shooting, and editing.

In 2013, she came to America to study film and fulfill her dream of becoming a filmmaker. During her time in the U.S., she has directed a number of short films, including a short documentary called Dream Bags (2016), which was selected for the SF Emmys. In 2017, she directed The Reason to Live (2017), which tells the story of a well-known BART street musician's life. This film was selected by The IndieFEST Film Awards and won the award for “Best Student Film” at the Golden Gate International Film Festival. Later, it successfully screened at six film festivals in the U.S.

A few months later, she was one of four directors chosen globally to go to Jerusalem for a 6-week film project. She led a team of five for her film, Jerusalem, if I forget you (2017), which was screened at the esteemed Jerusalem Film Festival and more than 10 other Jewish Film Festivals around the world.

She is currently directing and producing an experimental documentary short film called Dandelion Spores, in which a famous Korean dancer and another subject showcase the legacy of the Korean War through creative performances and storytelling. Rachel investigates issues such as immigration and underrepresented communities and focuses on themes like identity and acceptance.
